The brave men and women who serve as firefighters in our community are at risk for injury or even fatality on a daily basis. Between extinguishing raging fires and scaling tall ladders to save citizens from their burning homes, firefighters may find themselves in potentially dangerous situations on any given workday. However, the seemingly obvious occupational hazards are not the only risks that firefighters may be facing on a regular basis. In addition to the aforementioned perils, firefighters may also be exposed to asbestos while on the job. Asbestos fibers are known carcinogens and may lead to the development of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that attacks the pleural lining of the lungs.

In the United States, approximately 35 million residences contain structural materials that are laden with dormant asbestos, such as insulation or drywall compound. Prior to 1980, when the use of asbestos for construction was banned, the majority of homes were built using asbestos-containing materials. When these materials are damaged from the high heat of a fire, the asbestos fibers are released into the air, putting the firefighters at great risk of inhalation. The firefighters are also at risk for inhalation after the fire has ceased, when they may be sorting through rubble or debris that contains asbestos. At this point, the firefighters may no longer be wearing protective safety equipment, including approved breathing apparatuses, and the potential for inhalation of asbestos fibers during the clean up process is largely increased.

Mesothelioma takes years to develop, but generally claims the lives of its victims in under two years. There is no known cure. However, there are many mesothelioma treatment options available.
